E3 Nations Gear Up to Reinstate Sanctions on Iran
The foreign ministers of the three European countries, collectively known as the E3, outlined their position in a letter to the UN. In the communication, they emphasized the looming threat of "snapback" sanctions unless Iran resumes talks with the international community.
"We have made it clear that if Iran is not willing to reach a diplomatic solution before the end of August 2025, or does not seize the opportunity of an extension, E3 are prepared to trigger the snapback mechanism," the ministers stated in the letter, which the news outlet reviewed.
The letter follows recent discussions held last month in Istanbul between the three European powers and Iran. The talks aimed to revive stalled nuclear negotiations between the US and Tehran.
US President Donald Trump famously withdrew from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal during his first term, arguing that the agreement was insufficient to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. However, proponents of the deal maintain that it was effectively curbing Iran's nuclear ambitions. Iran, for its part, insists that its nuclear program is intended for peaceful purposes.
